90´s Revival / La vuelta de los 90

Those of you who lived through the 90`s, like me, probably feel like you are cruising down memory lane as flannel shirts, high waisted pants, cut off jeans, black biker jackets, sweatshirts and hightops (just to give a few examples) parade up and down the streets.  If I would have known back in the day that fashion was a 20 year cycle and that the clothes I so readily threw into a salvation army bin would be strutting down the runways in the future I might have folded them away into my trunk of memories instead of all the ¨best effort¨ trophies which now fill it.  

Los que habéis vivido los años 90, como yo, probablemente sentís como si los transeúntes de tu ciudad hubieran estado rebuscando en el baúl de los recuerdos; camisas de cuadros, pantalones de cintura alta, vaqueros cortos (cut offs), chaquetas negras moteras, sudaderas y zapatillas ¨high tops¨, para salir a la calle.  Si yo hubiera sabido que la moda de hace 20 años iba a volver no habría donado con tanta rapidez una ropa que ahora desfila por las pasarelas mas internacionales y mi baúl de recuerdos estaría lleno de ropa en vez de unos trofeos por haber ¨participado¨.  

Oh well.  My one consolation is that although fashion is a cycle it does tend to reinvent itself and doesn`t come back EXACTLY the same.   For example the 90`s grunge style combined with the ¨I don`t give a f**k¨ attitude has been replaced by a more feminine-casual style and a softer attitude.  Back in the day it was common to see models, celebrities and rock stars in the latest fashions, smoking a cigarette and flipping off the camera where as nowadays that is a big no-no.  Now we can sport that anything goes fashion but with our nails nicely manicured, our hair combed and a big smile and wave to accompany our look.  

Bueno, dicho eso, mi único consuelo es que aunque la moda vuelve siempre vuelve un poco cambiada.  Por ejemplo el estilo grunge de los 90`s combinado con esa actitud de ¨me da igual todo¨ ha sido reemplazado por un estilo mas femenino, casual y un comportamiento mas educado.  Antes era normal ver modelos, rockeros o celebritys a la última moda, con un cigarrillo en la boca y en la mano  un gesto vulgar pero hoy en día eso esta muy mal visto.  De hecho ahora la moda es mas bien ¨vale todo¨ pero eso si, con la manicura hecha, el pelo cuidado, una sonrisa blanca y saludando a la cámara con simpatía.  

One of my favorite 90`s revival trends are high tops which designers such as Marc Jacobs, Prada and especially Isabel Marant have brought back this year.  Celebrities such as Rhianna, Miranda Kerr and Kim Kardashian have all been spotted out sporting their casual look of skinny jeans or even flowy skirts with a pair of high tops.  And just so we don`t have to loose touch with our feminine side or any sex appeal many of this season high tops come with a heel incorporated (different from the 90`s version with no heel or a horrible platform heel).  

Una de mis tendencias favoritas de los 90`s son las zapatillas ¨high tops¨ que los diseñadores como Marc Jacobs, Prada y Isabel Marant han vuelto a incluir en sus colecciones de este año.  Famosos como Rhianna, Miranda Kerr y Kim Kardashian han sido fotografiadas con unos vaqueros pitillos o incluso faldas y unos high tops.  Y para que no perdamos nuestra apariencia femenina o nuestro sex appeal muchos de los modelos de esta temporada tienen tacón incorporado (muy diferente a la versión de los 90 que no llevaba o tenía una especie de plataforma horible).  

So those of you who did save your clothes from the 90`s you can go ahead and bring them out but just make sure to fabreeze them very well, getting rid of that grandma closet smell and make sure you rock the 90`s revival look with a 2012 attitude (careful to not go from Beyonce to a Spice Girl).  

Entonces para los que si habéis guardado vuestra ropa de los 90 podéis sacarla pero antes siempre aireandola bien para que no huela al armario de la abuela y dandole el toque del presente para asegurarte que pareces mas a una Beyonce que una Spice Girl.

Mifur, the International Fur and Leather Exhibition,  will be returning this year to Portello location, an exhibition center in the heart of Milan.  Within the 18,000 sqm, more than 200 companies will be exhibiting their collections for the 2012-13 Fall/Winter Collection in Fur and leather.  Professionals from the fur and leather industry will have the opportunity, from March 4-8, to browse and buy from any of the following categories;

1. accessories, patterns, equipment, cleaning and storage;
2. tannery services;
3. leather and sheepskin clothing;
4. fur garments and pret a porter;
5. skins

Mifur, la feria Internacional de Piel, este año volverá al Portello área, al recinto ferial en el centro de Milán.  Más de 200 compañias expondrán sus colecciones de piel del Otoño/Invierno en un edificio de 18,000 m2.  Profesionales de la industria de la piel tendrán la oportunidad, del 4-8 de Marzo, para visitar y adquirir artículos de las siguientes categorías;

1. accesorios, patrones, maquinaria, limpieza y almacenamiento;
2. servicios del curtido;
3. ropa de piel de cordero y piel (sin pelo);
4. ropa de piel de pelo y  pret a porter;
5. pieles

So maybe some of you are thinking, ¨But I just saw the conclusion of Milan Fashion Week¨.  Mifur, is not an extension of Milan Fashion week, it`s a whole seperate event, where the buyers, like me, have the opportunity to view collections and purchase already made garments (in my case) for our stores next seasons collections.  I, like most fashionists, have paid close attention to not only the runways from Milan, but also Paris, New York, London etc to watch for trends for next season.  Now Mifur is my actual playground to put what I`ve seen to pratice and ¨buy buy buy¨ beautiful trendy furs and leather for Crivero.  

Quizás estas pensando, ¨Pero si acabo de ver la clausura de la Pasarela de Milano¨.  Mifur, no es una extensión de Milan Fashion Week, sino un evento aparte, donde los compradores, como yo, tenemos la oportunidad para ver las colecciones y hacernos con prendas de último moda para nuestras tiendas para la temporada que viene.  Como la mayoría de la gente que se dedica a la moda, he prestado mucha atención a las pasarelas de Milan, Paris, New York, Londres etc buscando tendencias para la próxima temporada.  Mifur me brinda la oportunidad de poner todo este tiempo de investigación en practica y podré por fin ¨comprar, comprar, comprar¨ prendas de lo último en moda en piel para Crivero.

Next week after our attendance at Mifur I promise to give a summary of what we bought and what you can expect to see in Crivero for fall/winter 2012-13.  But until then I will leave you with some pictures from the Milan Fashion week which I will be keeping in mind while I purchase next seasons garments.

Golden child

I cannot let another day go by without mentioning Milan`s Fashion Week.  From the 14th of January to the 17th of January, 41 designer`s paraded a numerous amount of handsome models, famous actor`s and some very outlandish clothing down one of the most International runway`s.  The designer`s took the opportunity to present their 2012-13 autumn/winter Collection.  Taking into consideration that the sales of  luxury items for men grew in 2011 6% more than for women we can better understand why name brand designer`s are putting a lot of energy into their menswear collections.  There is a lot of potencial growth in this sector and this past week in Milan was just an demonstration of just how strong the market is for menswear.   

No puedo dejar que pase otro día sin comentar la semana de Moda en Milan.  Del 14 de Enero hasta el 17, 41 diseñadores exponían sus colecciónes de otoño/invierno 2012-13 utilizando actores como modelos que exhibian los conjuntos más extravagantes por las pasarelas.  Considerando que las ventas de artículos de lujo para caballero aumentaron en 2011 un 6% más que para mujeres nos ayuda comprender porque los diseñadores estan enfocando toda su energía y creatividad en las colecciónes de ropa para hombres.  Han visto que hay mucho potencial para incrementar sus ventas en este sector y la semana pasada en Milan fue una demonstración del crecimiento de este mercado.

One of the most awaited shows was Prada who had already mentioned some big names who would be modeling for them, such as Adrian Brody.

Uno de los desfiles más esperados fue el de Prada quien había adelantado los nombres de algunos famosos, como Adrian Brody, que iban a desfilar para ellos. 

Here he is in a very colorful red double breasted coat with a two toned Astrakan fur collar and John Lennon-esq glasses.  What do you think?  Not really my taste.  But not just in Prada did we see menswear with fur, something not uncommon now on today`s runway`s, but also in Diesel Black Gold.

Aquí lo tenemos con un abrigo rojo de doble abotonadura,  cuello bitono de Astracán y unas gafas a lo John Lennon.  ¿Qué os parece?  A mi no me gusta mucho.  No solo vimos en el desfile de Prada prendas y accesorios de pelo para caballeros, algo cada vez mas común, sino tambien en el desfile de Diesel Black Gold.

Here we have an indigo cavallino (a type of cowhide) coat with a lambskin collar.  Personally I like this style, looks almost like a double breasted trench coat,  and color better than Adrian Brody`s.  How about you?

Este abrigo de cavallino en color indigo con un cuello de cordero es espectacular.  A mi me gusta mucho este estilo, tipo trench, y el color mucho más que el modelo de Adrian Brody.  ¿No crees?

And the focus was not only on the clothing but also on accesories for men.  Most, to not say all, of the designer`s showcased a wide variety of handbags. 

Pero el enfoque no solo fue en ropa sino tambien en accesorios para hombres.  Casi todos los diseñadores tenian sus colecciónes de bolsos.  

Here is one of the models for Gucci wearing a worn leather double breasted blazer with a ¨doctor`s¨ astrakan fur bag.  If this was my boyfriend I definately would be stealing this bag for a weekend getaway. 

En el desfile de Gucci vimos mucha piel, como este modelo que lleva una chaqueta de piel desgastada y  bolsos grandes, como este tipo ¨doctor¨ en astracán.  No me importaría tener este bolso para una escapada de fin de semana.  ¡Que chic! 

Leave it to Giorgio Armani to bring elegance to any runway and this time it was no exception.  Here we see a model with a sheared mink coat and the model behind him is also wearing sheared mink but in a ¨parka¨ style coat.  And probably the star accesory was the 1920ish cap which all the models were wearing.  

Dejaselo a Giorgio Armani para traer elegancia a cualquier pasarela y esta vez en Milan no fue ninguna excepción.  En la foto dearriba vemos el modelo con un abrigo de visón rasado y el modelo de detrás tambien lleva un abrigo de visón rasado pero tipo ¨parka¨.  Y por supuesto hay que mencionar los gorros tipo años 20 que no faltaban en casi ninguno de los desfiles. 

The predominant colors for most of the collections were black, grey and we saw a lot of blue tones.  I really like blue for men.  The majority of Gucci`s Collection was all blue tones, very cool.  Of course we can always count on seeing color and this year in Milan it was no different.  Versace`s Collection was quite colorful and it also had a lot of military prints in their garments.  But red was the go to color for most of the Designers.  In the website http://www.fashionising.com/trends/b--young-mens-colors-fw12-13948.html we can see the color palette for men`s fashion for autumn/winter 2012-13 season. 

Los colores que mas destacaban eran los negros, grises, marrones y muchos tonos de azul.  De hecho la mayor parte de la colección de Gucci estaba compuesta por prendas azules.  En mi opinion un color muy acertado para hombres.  El rojo fue el toque de color más utilizado.  Había excepciones como Versace quien utilizaba el rojo, colores fosforescentes, y estampados militares.  Para saber más sobre los colores que se van a llevar para otoño/invierno 2012-13 podemos ver en la página web http://www.fashionising.com/trends/b--young-mens-colors-fw12-13948.html una muestra de colores para hombres.  

If the statistics are right then the sales in Luxury items for men will eventually end up equalling women`s.  Keeping this in mind the two major multinacional companies, PPR and LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) both being french, who own brands such as Gucci, YSL, Fendi etc, are fighting for the monopoly in this sector.  So guys know that you are the new golden child and all the designer`s have their sights set on you.  How does that make you feel?

Entonces si las estatisticas son correctas las ventas de articulos de lujo antes o despues igualarán a las de mujeres.  Teniendo esto en cuenta, las dos empresas multinacionales, PPR y LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) ambas franceses, quien tiene en su propiedad firmas como Gucci, YSL, Fendi etc. están competiendo por el monopolio en este sector.  Entonces caballeros, sois la nueva gallina de los huevos de oro, ¿Cómo sentís?
