Strawberry furs forever.....

With temperatures on the rise it seems like talking about fur should be out of the question.  But not so!  Springtime is the season for weddings, baptisms, communions and other more formal events.  Our sense of sociality seems to kick in and we tend to go out more to enjoy the nice weather.  So whether it be a cool morning or evening or that special occasion spring is the perfect season to wear our beautiful fur collars, stoles, capes and other accessories.  We can always count on fur for that added look of sofistication or as in the picture above, sexiness.  For that exact reason I love this picture.  The model above is wearing an electric blue dress with a very revealing strapless neckline and a matching blue fox stole.  I know that at weddings, for example, the Bride should be the center of attention but with an outfit like this the bride would definately have a hard time keeping all eyes on her.
Me encanta.
And since we are talking about the picture, I´d like to point out the strawberries, looks appetizing huh?  Well aside from fur, strawberries are another one of my favorite things.  Spring is the season for strawberries here in Spain and did you know that they are very beneficial for our health and our skin?  For example, strawberries help prevent and fight against cellulities (enemy #1 for us ladies).  A great DIY is to mash just strawberries or you can mix them with low fat yoghurt or olive oil and sugar to form a paste which we can then apply to our skin.  After 15 minutes we can wipe our faces clean to discover a tighter, softer and cleaner looking skin.  Strawberries contain hidrochloric acids which eliminate dead skin cells, clarify blemishes and helps fight against wrinkles.  So this spring there are no excuses why we cannot show off a radiant skin and our beautiful fur accessories in all our special ocasions.

Innovation and color in fur and leather

Yesterday was the last day of Mifur and as the Fur and Leather Exhibition has drawn to a close I want to summarize our visit to Milan.  Milan is the world`s fashion capital, and the city definately lives up to it`s name.  As we stepped off the plane at Linate International Airport, from the glass enclosed finger we were welcomed by Giorgio through this huge neon sign for ¨Emporio Armani¨.
This was just a prelude as to what our two day visit to Milan would have instore for us.  Milan never ceases to suprise me and exudes fashion.  Starting with it`s famous streets, Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga, Via Sant'Andrea, Via Manzoni, Via Borgospesso and Via Santo Spirito which together make up the  Fashion Quadrilatero. This area contains the most prestigious boutiques and showrooms in the world, where the rich and famous can shop and the rest of us mortals who do not fall into either of these two categories can peer in through beautifully decorated front windows and dream of a lavish lifestyle.  Milan`s Pasticceria`s (pastry shops), Trattoria`s(restaurants) ,Gelateria`s (ice cream shops) and Café`s awake your senses and can make your stomache growl.  The ¨grande finale¨ was a stop in front of the Duomo Cathedral to take in the sight and people watch in the ¨piazza (plaza).
Finally it was off to do some work, the real reason we were in Milan, and we took the metro to the exhibition center.  We were greeted there with protestors, against the use of animal fur, and as we entered through the doorways which were protected by the Carabinieri (Italian police) we were called ¨murderers¨.  Every year it is the same but this year there were fewer protestors, maybe because of the economic crisis some could not afford to take the day off of work.
Once inside we were engulfed in the warmth and exuberance which the fur and leather industry represent.  The first day being Sunday expectations that morning were high and the representatives from the companies were in good sprits as they welcomed their first customers.  I was happy to see more color this year in the fur and leather skins and garments.  Although the classic colors like black, brown, and camel are the best sellers, it`s nice to be able to pick from green`s, blue`s, grey`s and red`s for next seasons leather collection.
Unfortunately the price of fur; mink, astrakan, y fox, has all increased making it almost inaccesible for the Spanish market.  But luckily for us fashion is constatnly adapting to today`s demands and new techniques have been developed which enable us to making more affordable fur garments.  For example using knitted fur or pieces of fur instead of whole skins, fur combined with leather or textile or garments with fur trimmings, which can result in stylish garments but at a lower cost.  And with prices being more reasonable we can then look for a funner and younger style garment in colors, like pinks, blues or mauves.

As for accesories the star again this year is the muffler or eternity scarf.  I have been raving about these all season and if you still don`t have one make sure to start saving up for next season. By the end of the second day we could see that the economic crisis has also taken it`s toll on the fur and leather industry in Europe and most of the company representatives were complaining about the lack of buyers.  So as we waited in Malpensa airort for our flight we were left with a bitter-sweet feeling after Mifur.  On one hand we were feeling a little left out of ¨the game¨ because of the high prices but on the other hand we were very impressed with the innovative ideas for meeting the demands of lower prices in fur and leather.

1950´s Glamour, Where did it go?

In the 50`s words like ¨Glamour¨, ¨Elegance¨ and ¨Sophistication¨ were used over and over when describing Hollywood`s stars.  Every modern day 1950`s woman admired and tried to imitate the fashion and stylish behavior of some of Hollywood´s biggest names like, Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly.

The magazine Vogue, filled their covers and pages with very feminine and elegantly dressed women.  Dresses with a very tappered waist, pearl collars, extravagant furs with leopard prints were in style and what all women dreamed of having in their closets and jewlery boxes.  It was a time when women acted like ¨Ladies¨ and most maintained a set of values which over time have been long forgotten.
Unlike in the 50`s todays ¨street style¨ is all about dressing¨casual¨ or ¨sport¨.  In fact many of today`s celebrities have been ¨caught¨ not only dressing in a more casual manner but rather looking sloppy or as if they just rolled out of bed.  Maybe our celebrities should look more to the 1950`s icons for a lesson in how to dress and even sometimes act in public.  They should definately take into consideration that they are looked up to as role models by many young and not SO young women.
¨Lady Kitsch¨ is the third trend which Christina McDaniel, IFTF (International Fur Trade Federation), fashion and trend consultant has identified for fall/winter 2012-13.  With its origins based in the trends from the 1950`s we are reminded of a time when women spent hours in the beauty salon, and would not have dared to go out without being completely made up and impecably dressed.  It was also a time when sexy was more about being beautiful and elegant and didn`t necesserily mean the ¨lack of clothes¨ or something vulgar.
The colours which are associated with this trend are light pinks, ash grey`s and almond browns.  To better imagine this trend think of ¨Pin up¨ girl Marilyn Monroe, with her sexy laugh mixed with the sofistication and elegance of Grace Kelly and that gives of ¨Lady Kitsch¨.

What do I think of this fashion?  Well to be honest, I definately like it, but I do not think that it is totally compatable with today`s lifestyle.  Especially my lifestyle.  I don`t see myself spending hours in the beauty salon or bathroom everyday to get ready.  Nor could I ride my bike or run all over town with high heels on.  Although, if I didn`t have so many problems with my feet, I definately would love too.  But I do think that within the definition of ¨casual¨ we can still dress stylish and there is no reason to look like we went to bed in our clothes.  And that goes especially for those who are constantly in the public eye.  Below I have include a few pictures of celebrities who know how to dress, in my opinion, whether it be an everyday outfit or some awards ceremony.  What do you think?  Who are your worst and best dressed celebrities?

Are you ready to rumble???

ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE?  That´s what you should ask yourself as you step out the door heading to the first day of after Christmas sales.  The following few days the news is full of images of normally educated, polite shoppers pushing one another trying to get as close to the store entrance as possible before opening.  In fact I had an experience where the security guard actually came out before and said to the mass of people waiting outside  ¨please no running and no pushing¨.  Yes we were all adults outside.  But obviously his words were lost amongst the strategic planning which was going on in my head.  ¨How could I  politely push the little old lady out of my way, do a split leap over the baby stroller and beat my sister to that amazing gold dress which we both saw the week before.¨  At 10am the gun shot went off (or was that just in my head) and the doors opened.  The race has begun.  Luckily like us shoppers the store attendants had also put on their best running shoes and ran like hell to get out of the mobs way before they were trampled.
Garments started flying as they were grabbed off hangers and the unwanted ones left on the floor to be looked thru by the late comers.  Long nails, large rings, steel toed shoes are all used to ward off other possible shoppers who threaten to enter your area of madness.  I could go on and on, but I think you get my point.  So my question is……In these days of sales is our dignity and respect for ourselves and others totally lost?  Becasue an item is 50% off does that really mean that we can act like animals?  I think not.  Many stores have early sales or are constantly offering some kind of discount.  I prefer to plan my shopping, take my time looking at prices and buy before all the craziness of the sales.  Then at least I am sure that I will find my size, not buy something unwanted because it is half off or worse something that doesn`t look good on me just because it was a bargain.   During sales I hate the long lines in the dressing rooms or waiting forever at the checkout because there is a price check.  But overall the disappointment of finding out that the shoes I was waiting to buy only have a 10% discount and they no longer have them in my size.  UUUGGGHHH!  So before you are ¨caught on tape¨ wrestling around on the floor of your favorite department store, think to yourself, is losing my dignity really worth it.
